We're continuing our “Wildly Successful” mini-series with another organization that can help you move your business or start a new one in Hastings County. In this episode, Krystal Campbell, the vice chair of the Bancroft Business Improvement Area, tells us how the BIA supports businesses in downtown Bancroft, and why Bancroft is such a hidden gem for entrepreneurs that she almost didn't want to tell people about it (consider it an I Left the City exclusive). If you're looking to start a business without a clear idea of what it should be, listen to the end for what Krystal sees as gaps in the market.
Listen/watch below, or read on for a few highlights.
How the Bancroft BIA Supports Businesses
The Bancroft Business Improvement Area (BIA) supports local businesses through marketing, hosting events, and making the streets attractive and welcoming for visitors. The volunteers that run the BIA also make new businesses feel welcome by introducing themselves and answering questions. Krystal, who is also the owner of Crowe’s Footwear, says she’s more than happy to have a coffee with anyone who’s interested in chatting.
Why Bancroft is a Hidden Gem for Entrepreneurs
Bancroft has a rare mix of rugged natural beauty, quaint streets, a thriving arts scene, strong community ties, and a strategic location at the crossroads of major highways. According to Krystal, the area’s affordable property prices significantly lower the overhead for businesses compared to larger cities, making it a financially viable option for new businesses. Further, the town’s stable four-season economy supports businesses year-round, with a steady influx of tourists complementing the strong support from locals.
Bancroft's Market Gaps
For entrepreneurs without a specific business idea in mind, Krystal says the demand for clothing stores is high after a couple recent closures. Visitors are also looking for more options in rentals and tours. For more ideas, Krystal suggests talking to business owners like herself, who are always talking to locals and visitors and hearing what they want to see in Bancroft.
