Family Day is fast approaching (on February 15th) and I think we can all agree that this Family Day is going to look like no other Family Day that we’ve celebrated in the past. Despite whatever current restrictions will be in place on that day, you can still enjoy it by spending quality time with your family. There are plenty of things you can do that are fun for everyone while socially distancing and staying close to home.
GO SKATING ON THE OUTDOOR RINKS
While indoor rinks remain closed, many outdoor rinks are still open as getting fresh air and exercise is highly encouraged at this time. The Dungannon Recreation Centre in L’Amable (near Bancroft) has an outdoor rink that is open to the public. Covid restrictions and guidelines are listed at the rink so you can have a safe and enjoyable afternoon of skating.
DRINK HOT CHOCOLATE AND WATCH THE SUNSET
There is something so peaceful about sitting at the edge of a frozen lake and watching a winter sunset with the family. Even kids, when bundled up warm enough, seem to enjoy this as long as they have a hot chocolate in their hands. Stop at By the Way Cafe in Tweed, or Goldmine Bakery in Madoc and grab a hot beverage and drive to a quiet spot on a lake. Our family loves Cordova Lake in Marmora (pictured) to take in a beautiful sunset.
GET OUTSIDE ON THE TRAILS
Family day is a great time to get outside and enjoy nature. A walk on the winter trails at O’Hara Mills Conservation Area (pictured) in Madoc is absolutely beautiful no matter the season, and winter is no exception. O’hara is often a less populated conservation area, so you can enjoy a quiet space with lots of room to explore.
If you’d like to explore the trails at one of the local Ontario Provincial Parks, The Stirling-Rawdon library is offering day-use parking passes for the parks that can be checked out for 7 days with your library card. Use the pass to check out local parks like Silent Lake Provincial Park. Silent Lake Provincial Park has absolutely gorgeous terrain and it is a smaller park that tends to draw fewer crowds than the bigger provincial parks.
Looking for something more adventurous? Highland Wilderness Tours in Maynooth offers dogsledding tours. This is the type of activity that could be great for older kids for a memory of a lifetime. Check their site for prices, tour times, and availability.
PLAY BOARD GAMES
When it’s cold outside sometimes it’s nice to stay in with the family and play some games. Did you know you can borrow board games from the North Hastings Library? It’s a great way to try out some new games you may have never played before.
HAVE A PIZZA AND MOVIE NIGHT
After an afternoon outside, why not make it a pizza and movie night with the family? You can pick up a delicious pizza from Dino’s in Madoc and rent a family movie to enjoy in the comforts of your own home. Grab your favourite blanket, cozy up in your pajamas, and let the kids build a fort to enjoy the show. Or, if pizza isn’t really your thing why not order some wings for takeout from the Iron grille in Marmora?
FAMILY DAY IS THE BREAK WE ALL NEED
When Family Day was created it was a welcome holiday because at this time of year there are few holidays and winter can feel long at times. It is a time to take a break from the stress of life, if only for a day. So, take a much-deserved break and enjoy the day, especially this year.
