Writer Jordan Whitehouse sent us his take on some Wildly Authentic shops where you can find that perfect gift for Father’s Day.
You might not be able to celebrate Father’s Day as usual with your dad this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still show him some love. Many shops across Hastings County are offering online and phone sales, and some will even deliver. From craft beer and cider, to paintings and woodwork, to fishing and hunting gear, here are 11 local options.
7/62 Craft Brewers
The lockdown has been tough for many small businesses in the area, and that’s especially true for newer ones like Madoc’s 7/62 Craft Brewers. Since day one, the craft brewery’s mission has been to brew “Simply Good Beer”, and they’ve done that. They now have six core beers on tap: Al’s Best Bitter, Madoc Dark (Irish red), Hastings Canadian (Kolsch-inspired), Isolation IPA, The Little Irish (Irish ale), and Nutmeg Stout. Place your order online or call or text it in to 416-970-8500 before picking it up curbside. You can also order in person at the retail counter. Free local delivery is available.
162 Russell Street, Madoc
Kings Mill Cider
If your dad is more of a hard cider fan, send him some of the award-winning brews perfected by Kees Morsink and Margaret Van Helvoort at Kings Mill Cider. Based in the rolling hills of Stirling, they use only the finest and freshest hand-picked Ontario apples to come up with a wide range of concoctions, from bone dry to fruity. Find them all in the online shop and then have them delivered right to your dad’s door wherever he is in Ontario for free as long as your order is over $30. You can also call in your order to 613-395-4079 and pick it up on Saturdays between 11 am and 6 pm.
596 Kings Mill Road, Stirling
Maybe your dad is in need of something new to look at inside, like a painting or other work of art. This Maynooth art gallery features a solid roster of local artists working in a variety of mediums, including oil paint, glass, and pottery. The gallery is closed to visitors, but the owners are still there to answer any questions and fill orders via phone or email (firstname.lastname@example.org). They are also taking photos of what’s available in the gallery and posting them to Facebook. You can pay using e-transfer, and shipment is via Canada Post.

Lakeside Gems Rock Shop
Whether your dad is already a gem and mineral aficionado or is looking for a new hobby, Lakeside Gems Rock Shop may be a good place to find him the right gift. The Bancroft shop’s online store includes geological tools and accessories, rock tumblers and supplies, books and card decks, new age products, and a wide range of crystals, rocks, and minerals. You can also purchase tickets to upcoming mineral-collecting field trips in Bancroft, the mineral capital of Canada.

Madawaska Kanu Centre
The lockdown will be lifted at some point, and when that happens your dad may seriously need an outdoor adventure. If that sounds like him, a paddling course or white-water rafting trip may do the trick. Madawaska Kanu Centre is one of the best in Ontario and has been run by three generations of the same family. Founded in 1972, it was also the first white-water school in the world. They have gift cards for future trips available via phone and online.
247 River Road, Barry’s Bay
Tinhouse Woodworking and Espresso Bar
Jeff and June Wells’ woodworking showroom is usually open by Victoria Day and typically showcases over 40 artists. For now, they are taking orders via email (email@example.com) for anything that you see on the website, which may include coffee tables, harvest tables, custom furniture, charcuterie boards, pottery, birdhouses, and more. They also have gift certificates and may have an online store up and running by the time you read this.

Chris’ Live Bait Fishing and Hunting
If dad’s an angler or hunter and is in need of fishing accessories, firearms, ammunition, or apparel, Chris’ Live Bait Fishing and Hunting is a great option. Based just east of Marmora, the shop has gift certificates and is offering curbside contactless pickup. Shipping is available for non-live-bait purchases. The website has some of the products they carry, and an e-commerce site might be available before Father’s Day. You can also call in your order to 613-472-2832 or email it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Stay tuned to Facebook for draws, contests, and free giveaways.

Ontario Water Buffalo Co.
For those foodie fathers, head to the Ontario Water Buffalo Co.’s online shop for meat that’s 100 per cent grass-fed and hormone- and antibiotic-free. From Buffalo ribs to steaks to sausages, it’s all high-quality cuts here. The Buffalo cheese is just as famous and includes mozzarella, gouda, asiago, and caciocavallo. Might as well throw in some gelato or tarts, too. The store is open, but it might be easier to make your order online and then have it shipped to your dad.

Trips and Trails Adventure Outfitting
Unfortunately, Trips and Trails has temporarily suspended its canoe, kayak, and mountain bike rental program during lockdown, but if you really want to splash out for your dad, you can still buy him a boat, stand-up paddleboard, or bike. Accessories are also available, like life jackets and paddles. Give the website a look for brands and products, then call or email the store for more info about what’s available and when and how you can pick it up.

The Root Cellar
Garden centres are one of the few retail options still allowed to offer in-store shopping, and The Root Cellar, near Thomasburg, is a solid one-stop-shop for dads with green thumbs. They offer a wide selection of shade and fruit trees, evergreens, shrubs, annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, and locally-made garden accessories. You can also get bagged soil and mulch here, as well as grass seed and lawn fertilizer. The staff are very helpful and are happy to give you planting advice and helpful hints.
